Ana Julaton: History and Her-Story
by Vivek Wallace

Throughout time, the sport of boxing has seen many historical endeavors, as well as many men who were talented enough to pull them off.
There was the undefeated ‘Rocky’ Marciano, who’s 8 year tenure in the sport netted him an unfathomable perfect record of 49-0 with 43KO’s; There was the explosive “Iron” Mike Tyson, who became the youngest ever heavyweight champion in history by winning the highly coveted WBC strap at age 20; And there was Leon Spinks, who found a way to win his first title in the sport in only 8 fights, by way of a decision over none other than Muhammad Ali.

Each of those stories hold a special place in the history books of boxing, but recently, there was a new paragraph entered when Fil-Am phenom, Ana ‘Hurricane’ Julaton, became one of, (if not thee) quickest boxer to ever win a championship title in the sport, accomplishing the feat in only her 7th professional bout.

Such an accomplishment may never be duplicated again, but what’s even more intriguing is that rather than hand-picking a few less-than-capable opponents to aid her in extending her championship tenure, Julaton has instead set out once again to add more history to the books by facing Donna Biggers, (19-8, 16KO’s), for the WBO super-bantamweight title in a unification bout.

I recently had a moment to talk to the ‘Queen of the Philippines’, and within that 20 minute window, two things became abundantly clear: Her hunger for success is more, yet her margin for error is less.

When reminded how easy it is to become complacent after winning a world title in only 7 pro fights, Julaton spoke without caution in saying that she “still considers herself a student of the sport”, and that she “still has room to evolve [her] speed, power, and skills”. She concluded her statement in saying that “when the time comes where [she] is no longer challenged or motivated, [she] will simply move on”.

Moments deeper into the conversation, things shifted to her newly acquired accolades, which included acknowledgement as one of the “100 Most Influential Filipinas In America”, as well as a Proclamation letter from Filipino President, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

The humble Julaton was visibly moved to be part of such a prestigious selection of women who spent decades of blood, sweat, and tears building their legacies, but the Proclomation letter she received clearly touched her more than words could ever capture.
When asked for her immediate thoughts upon being presented the letter, Julaton stated, “she [President Arroyo] has so many other obligations – she runs a country. So for her to even know me, and take out the time to honor

me, was amazing”.
With all of those monumental moments in her rearview, the reality here is that Julaton now finds herself 2 days away from a long road that lies ahead. A road that will give her the chance to add more history to her story.
Her native countryman, Manny Pacquiao, has recently become an iconic 8th wonder of the world, yet if we were summoned to peg her numerical essence, it would be 7th heaven, as her attempt to gain an unprecedented 2nd title after only 7 pro fights will come just weeks after his (Pacquiao’s) historical effort of 7 world titles in 7 different weight classes.
As we await the outcome of her pending showdown, we’re reminded once again that even in a sport dominated by men, history can be revised when we take a glimpse at her (Ana Julation’s) story. And in a very classic fashion, it serves as no coincidence that her opponents name is “Biggers”…..For to he who much is given, much is expected, and there’s no question, this run at history will take here biggest effort yet to achieve!
Stay tuned.
