Ana Julaton reclaims the WBO Super Bantamweight Title -Socrates (philboxing.com)
Rama, Ontario – In an arduous war at Casino Rama, the women stole the show with the crowd split on their opinions of the
winner. Filipina American Ana Julaton faced off against Mexican Maria Villalobos in a ten round war which resulted in a controversial split decision in favor of Julaton. Round for round the war was waged inside the pocket between the female fighters, in which both fighters found victory and failure. Villalobos possessed tremendous power staining the left eye of Julaton with her winding hooks and swelling it enough to make it difficult for Julaton to posses full vision.
The war was won by Julaton’s quick reversing angles, ducking and rotating footwork and the snapping jab. This lightning jab thrown in concession of two’s, three’s and four’s scored most of Julaton’s points. The crowd showed support in even favor, to both corners, but the crowd’s enchantment was won by the level of athleticism both these ladies displayed.
There were memorable punches coming from both fighters landing hard, pushing the sweat of each others heads. Villalobos made her impact on her body with crushing hooks and uppercuts while Julaton defended with jabs and counter hooks, clinching Villalobos to stop the momentum to her body. Controversy coming from the third round where Julaton slipped and Villalobos continued to punch where the referee declined to warn or demerit a point. In the fourth round Villalobos landed a looping hook after the bell resulting in more damage to the already swollen eye.
The final result had a split decision with two judges scoring the bout 96-94 in favor of Julaton and one judge scoring the bout with 97-94 in favor of Villalobos. Julaton’s face showed a hard won battle with mixed reactions from the crowd. Fatigue was not a factor in both fighters. In the end it was a fantastic display of pugilism irrespective of their gender. Julaton now dawns three belts and a great prospects of fights on the horizon.
In the post presser, both fighters displayed a respect for each other while detailing the methods behind their fight. Trainer Freddy Roach announced he would like a rematch between the two fighters to take place in the Philippines, in which Villalobos replied “Mucho Bueno” (very good). From here Julaton will be defending her three belts and possibly attempt a unification of a fourth. Villalobos is looking to avenge her loss, but still shows contentment to fight any fighter her trainers and promoter Allan Tremblay set for her.

Ana Julaton’s partnership with American trainer Freddie Roach produced a first title for the Filipino-American lady boxer, the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) female super bantamweight crown.
Three months after losing her bid to win the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) female super bantamweight crown, the Roach-trained Julaton returned at the Casino Rama on Wednesday night and scored a split decision win over Mexican Maria Villalobos.
Denied by Lisa “The Bad News” Brown of claiming the WBA crown last March, Julaton displayed toughness in order to win and add the WBO female super bantamweight crown to her two previous world titles.

It was the third world title for Julaton, nicknamed “The Hurricane”. She also won the super bantamweight belts of the International Boxing Association (IBA) and World Boxing Council (WBC).
The win also improved Julaton’s fight record to seven wins, with one by way of knockout. She also had two losses and a draw.
Villaobos suffered her fourth defeat against six wins with three by KO.
Roach, a four-time Trainer of the Year awardee by the Boxing Writers Association of America and Manny Pacquiao’s celebrated coach, teamed up with Julaton more than a month before the Fil-Am boxer’s fight against Villalobos. – RCJ/Jon Perez, GMANews.TV
A Day At Wild Card: Ana Julaton & Kaliesha West By David A. Avila
LOS ANG
ELES-Too bad not a single television crew was around when two-time world champion Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton and bantamweight contender Kaliesha “Wild Wild” West met at the Wild Card on Monday.
It had been more than two years since the two California prizefighters had sparred with each other and a lot has changed since that time. Julaton had picked up two junior featherweight world titles and West had fought two world champions to a draw.
If you’re not familiar with West and Julaton they’re not only great prizefighters but two of the most photogenic boxers too. Those inside the Wild Card Boxing gym who didn’t know women boxing got an education as both sparred eight rounds.
The usually buzzing gym stopped as the two California girls put on head gear and boxing gloves to begin sparring. Men and women crowded around the ring to see what you may have to pay several hundred dollars in the future to see.
Female boxing at its best took place and about five dozen people got a glimpse of world championship caliber fighters.
Julaton (6-2-1) recently lost her world title but is stepping right back into the wars and fights Maria Jose Villalobos (6-3, 3KOs) for the vacant WBO junior featherweight title in Ontario, Canada on Wednesday June 30. It’s the first time a female world title fight will be aired nationwide on TSN Sports television.
“It’s a huge deal,” said Angelo Reyes, Julaton’s advisor. “They’re saying more than a million people will see the fight.”
Getting televised is a necessity for women’s boxing if it’s to advance to the next level. Without a doubt Julaton is perfect for television for athletic and aesthetic reasons.
West (11-1-2) recently fought two former world champions back-to-back and fought to a draw with both Ada Velez and Denmark’s Anita Christensen. West will fight Brazil’s Valeria Dos Santos (3-1) in Lima, Peru where the entire nation will be watching the six round battle.
“We’re ready to go,” said Juan West, who is Kaliesha’s father and trainer. “Kaliesha should be too strong for anybody the throw at her.”
During the eight rounds Julaton and West sparred they lit up the ring with their strong combinations, blocking and slipping. If they ever fight it should be in front of an American television audience, not a gym full of people training.
Freddie Roach is now training Julaton again and has been working on her style and defense to re-groom her to his own expectations. She looks very sharp.
As the two top flight females exchanged blistering punches all I could think was HBO or Showtime should get a load of this. America is missing something.
